This line resonates deep. It's weird, we strive for freedom but we seem most content when we don't have it. When there are no options we are at peace with the option we have. If we have many or (god forbid) infinite options then we have many or infinite doubts along with anxiety.

We strive for freedom at the same time we cower from it.

Perfectly put, and that tension is what is missing from many Sociological and Political analysis today, which I think has been very consequential. Freud, Berger, Rieff, and Hunter understood this dynamic and that it was paramount that we learned how to manage it, but we did not listen to them, and I fear we are paying the consequences for that deafness. Hopefully we'll get our act together, but hard to say...
