I love it! Gurus don't want philosophers around. They don't teach others how to interpret and disagree productively. I would say my love for philosophy in part is based in a hatred of cults and forms of ideology that make people act cultish. I can be sympathetic, because we all want to belong somewhere. But at Theory Underground I remind everyone that this is for those who don't belong, and even they don't belong. We're not a community of non-belonging (which would be oxymoronic) but instead fellow travelers with intersecting journeys.

Excellent, excellent, and very well put! Inspired by Hume, I too have found philosophy invaluable for avoiding cults, as well as for correcting messianic tendencies (intentional or subconscious). I too am sympathetic, but danger is danger, and it must be identified as such. And 'a community of non-belonging" is an awesome phrase! Please know that I appreciate everything Theory Underground is doing, and I wish you all the best in everything you do!
